What's the Optimal Number of Keywords per Post?

I've read that you should concentrate on your 2 or 3 main keywords that you want to rank for, and I do take care to put those ones in Title Tags, Meta descriptions, Permalinks and first paragraphs. But, I always have many more keywords that apply to any particular post - and they are all important keywords and relevant. I try and limit these other (not primary) keywords, but I can still end up with 15 keywords per post (mostly long and detailed 'How To' posts).

Is this larger number of keywords 'diluting' the value of my primary keywords, or do the secondary keywords scoop up extra traffic e.g. from plurals, verbs as well as nouns, similes, different but similar keyword phrases, explanatory detail info keywords?

Every one of my designated 15 keywords is highly relevant (and appears more than once in the content), but should I prune them to increase Googlebot focus (on my primary keywords) - do you think keyword pruning is likely to increase (or decrease) my Google Page rank and traffic?

Thanks in advance.

Well, from my experience, 1 - 2% keyword density works good for my blog but the content has to be around 400-500 words, I don't like writing too long since I believe my readers don't like too read a long article, just stick with the point. Aside from my main keyword, I usually also use 3-4 LSI keywords in the article

After more research I have a clearer idea about keywords: 2 or 3 in meta tags, headings and first paragraphs, aim for higher density than top competitors for same keywords (No 1 Page 1 of serps), write good content and many associated keywords and keyword phrases will be there without tweaking, and the 'keywords' you add with your seo plugin are not used by Google - apparently - but do you believe that?.....or not? I add keyword tags anyway - just in case.

Personally i don't worry too much about keyword density. I make sure when i'm writing about a certain subject, i just aim to cover the topic from every angle. What would my visitor want to find out by reading my article? Cover the topic completely and you should have no problems.

Yes that's true, and now I know I don't have to worry about keywords because by writing information dense content articles, the keywords and keyword density in the content take care of themselves. I still make sure my main (2 or 3) keywords are in the title, meta title and meta description and first paragraph and the rest takes care of itself.

When I originally asked the question of this thread I was asking about the optimal number of designated keywords you add as tags when using an seo plugin after you've written your content, and those ones are apparently ignored by every search engine except Bing - one source for that info - so either way those designated keywords probably don't matter.

In terms of ranking, just prioritize to rank the ones that have most searches and least comp. first, and you'll see results faster.

At least a 5% keyword density, 1%-3% is to low no matter what anyone tells you, this goes double if you have ADs on your website. The keywords will have an exact effect on what ADs show, especially Adsense ADs. Most people will disagree with that saying google will punish you but thats non-sense. If you want your website to be index properly when people search, keywords is the number 1 factor. The ADs on most websites are relevant to the keywords, you notice that when you just visit most websites.

If you notcie the keyword for this post is ADs. You notcied I used it alot but keep it within the subject we are talking about. Master that and you do just fine.
