Using + Sign in Title Tag Instead of "With"

Hi,

I have a number of product title tags I'm optimizing for a eCommerce store. There are a number of longtail keyword with the word "with" in them that I'd like to rank for. However using the word with really chews up my character count in the title tag if you know what I mean..

e.g of some of the keywords (not real one's):
dog collar with black finish
dog collar with red finish

Not good e.g's but I'm brain dead now..

So was hoping to optimize with:
Dog Collar + Black Finish | Brand Name

instead of

Dog Collar with Black Finish | Brand Name

I'm wanting to do this for two reasons - reduce the overall character count in the title tag and also be slightly different than my competitors. A number of them including amazon showing in the search results for that title tag...i.e with the "with" in it.

I understand the "+" symbol is just seen as the word "and" though. Is that correct?

Let me know your thoughts...or should I just stick with the exact keywords..

Thanks!
Beth
