Does Domain Age matter for a Blogspot blog?

I have a blog on Blogspot which is 1 year old, has a lot of backlinks and used to rank very well...until the stupid Google Penguin slapped it (twice!)

Does it worth to invest a lot of time now and to get rid of the bad stuff and build quality links, write more articles etc...just so I can continue with the same blog that is already 1 year old and might have some authority?

Or does domain age don't even matter on Blogger, and I might as well start a brand new website?

Some say domain age has a dampening effect on how aggressively you build your links. In my experience, page and domain authority have a much greater effect on the links you can and cannot build. If you have a back link profile with nothing but exact match forum profiles and blog comments, then you may have an uphill battle getting it to return to its previous position. Like we talked about in the other thread, quality will beat quantity in all aspects of SEO. If you want to PM me the details, I'll be happy to have a quick look at the your page's back link profile and page authority.

    • Domain age plays a key role in SEO. Most websites and blogs with older domains have a good reputation and receive lots of traffic, so they are perceived as a valuable source of information by the search engines. However, if you are targeting less competitive keywords, a new domain is just as beneficial as an aged domain.

My best suggestion would be to you : please buy a domain and host your website on any good hosting provider. You are risking to much in blogspot. It's free and people normally don't want to read or visit free sites these days.

You can keep blogspot for link building to your main site , even we do create some blogs on wordpress and blogspot just to increase back links towards our main site.

How about I buy a custom domain name through Blogger so I can keep all my content. Do you think that all of my links, Page Rank and authority will remain the same? Or it would be just like I made a brand new website?

The thinking behind this is that spam websites are more likely to be new sites that will quickly fall off the radar. Therefore for Google, Age=Trust and must do so for SEO too.

Have you got any reason behind the drop in ranking, may be content or excessive backlinks are reasons. First of all you need to check the reason behind the drop in ranking if content is main issue then I don’t guess it’s a easy task to update the content on whole blog. In this case you can get new domain but if the backlink is issue then you don’t need to go for new domain. Remove unnecessary or low quality links pointing to your website.

I think that the main reason for my drop are backlinks. I made a lot of link exchanges, all of them pointing to the homepage and with the same keywords. That was a big mistake, but at that time I didn't knew so much about IM.

I was thinking of asking those people to modify my links and put different keywords to different inner pages. This way I will have a wide variety of links... Or the best choice is to simply remove some of the links?

Yes, domain age is big factor in SEO and it matters also if your site is at blogger.
I think you should remove the negative backlinks and continue building you site.
