Is there a good way to search for blogs that are moderated, active and have some visitors, as well as in your niche? I have tried Alexa but it doesnt really get at what's a good blog.

If you know your niche even remotely you would know the big blogs in it.

I've spent the last 59 months building 412 MFA sites. Each site averages 8 cents per day...I said average, some make up to 17 cents per day, PASSIVE INCOME! This income allows me to live comfortably and buy ANY flavor Jolly Rancher or Skittles I desire. Don't give in to fear, it CAN be done!

I agree. There can literally be hundreds of thousands of blogs in some niche's. There are PLENTY of very popular ones that you'd never know of without doing a little digging.

    Definitely get Scrapebox.

At the moment I'm using it to harvest posts that were created within the last 30 days for a particular niche.

I'll take it a step further once I'm done and run a PR check on all of the blogs themselves, saving any that are PR1 or higher. This should give me a pretty large list of active, PR1 or higher blogs that have posts within the niche I'm interested in.

Another way to search for blogs in your niche is technorati, they use a point system so the best blogs rank highter...

Google Blog Search - look at their subscribers.
top blogs on Technorati and listings at Alltop are also worth a look.
