Link building for a site which hasn't launched

Hi,

I've built an ecommerce site which will be selling computer accessories. At the moment, I haven't made any deals with wholesalers/manufacturers and so the site is finished but the product categories are empty - i.e. there are no products on the site.

Is it ok if i start SEO marketing and link building it now? So that once i get products on there, i'll be able to get some traffic straight away thus allowing me to sell products immediately. So say i have a product category for wireless mice at page mystore.com/wireless-mice, would i be able to promoting that link for say, "wireless mice" even if it has no products on there? Or will Google see flag this as not appropriate?

Would love to hear some advice. Many thanks.

myksterg.

Sounds very risky to me as it's not natural at all for a site to gather inbound links when the main content is missing!

Natural sites gather links when the content is not only complete but also outstanding.

    • Sure you can do that.

But, you need to go about it the right way.

Here is a little idea on how you can do this. Consider building a small curation page, like

      DRUDGE REPORT 2012®

Promote this page, and use it to link to the best resources related to the topic of computer accessories. Like linking to an informative resource on wireless mice that customer would be most interested in.

Once your eCommerce site page has been set up, you can use the links from that page and switch some of them over to the new page so that traffic that is already coming to your page gets redirected to your new eCommerce site. And you also get some nice, quality backlinks.

However, make sure the content and information on your new page is at least as good as, or even better than that of the page you were previously linking to.

And also don't direct all the links only to your new eCommerce site once it has finished being set up. Link to other informative pages that would benefit your visitors. Ideally, educate them through the resources you link to, leading to the end result of why your eCommerce site provides something that other sites aren't offering...

Repeat the process by creating another small curation page. Only difference, once your eCommerce site has been set up, turn this page into a 301 redirect to your eCommerce site so all backlink juice goes to your new site.

I don't think its a good idea to go for SEO right now. Make your site as it should be then go for SEO.

Might be easier to get it setup with articles about your future launch and what you'll be doing with the site.
Create a buzz with Press Releases once you have some content on your site.
Make some video advertisements about the site, even if it is just a list of the products you'll have with royalty free music.
But you have to have something there before you can get any link building going.

    No.
It would return 404 errors as there is no such page or if you have the pages created Google would come along and see no product/content and just leave it and give your site no value
