Question for Yukon about Cross-Linking

Yukon, in post # 39 of this thread from April called "If You're Not Using Silo Structure...", you give instructions for cross-linking internal pages by using the main keyword from one page as an <h2> tag on a newer page, followed by a paragraph related to the tag.

I'm trying to re-educate myself after getting hurt badly by panda/penguin. To this end, I just want to ask how come you don't run into duplicate content issues with this strategy?

It's perfectly acceptable to have a paragraph or so to be duplicated to another page. You won't run into penalties for that.

The lead pages for my silo's, for example, list about 10-12 child pages. In addition to their Titles which are hyperlinked inside h2 tags, I also the call "the_excerpt" for each of those child pages, and that includes the first paragraph of each page (which is basically a summary of the page).

That adds content value to the lead page, in addition to whatever content it has of its own.

Just DON'T duplicate WHOLE pages, or LARGE blocks of text.

You don't have to use the exact same text on each page, the first page can summarize a 2nd (long page of text) in 1-3 unique paragraphs.

Read this related comment I posted on another forum thread. The example below should help, specifically the last <h2> tag & the link below it.

The last <h2> tag would be a short summary of a much more detailed 2nd page. Then when you get to the 2nd large page detailed page, use another paragraph or two to summarize a 3rd page that is detailed on a related keyword.

    Repeat...

Basically all your doing is making a reference/link to a page you want ranked in Google SERPs.

Each of the links in the top of the article are jump-links that jump down the page to their matching <h2> tags.

Notice the last <h2> tag & the link below that tag. That link (Shopping for LED TVs) would point to a 2nd internal page that is 100% relevant to the keyword anchor-text (Shopping for LED TVs), it would be a larger article/sales-page/etc... on the same subject.

All of the <h1>, <h2>, & hyperlinks are keywords I would be trying to rank for.

Yukon, in the examples above, is there a reason why the last <h2>tag- Shopping for LED TVs - has a link to a different internal page and the other <h2> tags do not?

Is it just because that would be too many links on one page?

No, that was only an example. I could have done something like the example below.

Another trick, notice how I split the destination links/URLs on the keyword Led TV reviews anchor-text. One link (Led TV) points at a separate page/URL than the 2nd anchor-text (reviews) directly next to the first keyword. So I get the benefit of having exact match text on this page & splitting that relevancy between two other separate pages with keyword anchor-text links.

None of this is set in stone, there just techniques to get relevancy passed from page-1 to page-2, etc... without looking like your stuffing links/text.

The example below would still provide a useful page for traffic while ranking multiple pages & getting jump-links in the SERP description, which can help increase SERP CTR (more links in the SERPs).
