I have a few sites built with Weebly...are there any disadvantages to this if I start building backlinks to them? Or should I have my own domain?

You can still make the page rank with normal SEO techniques. It is pretty much the same as having a Squidoo lens as an example. I have many Squidoo pages that rank very highly and have for some time now because of on page optimization as well as link building.

However I would recommend purchasing hosting and a domain if you plan on making a long term business out of it. You will have much more control as far as analytics and other things like Google webmaster tools. In the long run it is a much better benefit to have your own domain.

I agree with mcarey6. In fact, your page will likely rank faster on Weebly than it would on its own domain because of Weebly's good page rank (7 at last check). But long term, you want to have the control of your pages and you can only guarantee control on your own domain.

So I would say getting your own domain is the way to go. But how about this. Get your domain and build another site that is similar to the Weebly site but different. You can still offer the same products but you would hold two separate properties and compete with yourself (I like those odds).

Put all of your SEO efforts into to both domains. It will take a little bit for the new one to rank but if you put in the time early it will pay off later.

But here's where it gets good...

For 3-4 of your major keywords optimize your home page for them but also have a sub page that is optimized just as good for the same keyword. Do this one both of the domains. After a little time you will have your main listing plus an indented listing in the search results for each domain.. That's 4 SPOTS out of ten in the SERP. If you optimize them good enough you could possibly hold the 1-4 spots on the first page.

Now mind you this is only my personal opinion but I think you could be very successful with this method. It will take you more work but think about the possibilities...
