Mighty Randfish from SEOmoz discussed about 10 Myths That Scare SEOs But Shouldn't on their whiteboardFriday.

Here are the 10 myths he mentioned :

1. Too many links pointing to my site from one particular domain.
2. Someone’s building links to my site
3. My keyword ''density'' is too high
4. Other sites are scraping and re-publishing my blog
5. If Google "sees" my analysis, they'll punish me for low engagement
6. This link is "reciprocal", will it penalize me?
7. I'm linking w/ non-ideal anchor text; will that hurt my relevancy?
8. There are links in my footer. Can they negatively affect me?
9. Will URLs without keywords prevent me from ranking well?
10. Won't "link bait/content marketing eventually devalued/penalized too?"

I read that article when it was first posted. Essentially if you have a site that is completely natural then you have nothing to worry about but if you're manipulating rankings through active link building then you have to be more careful.

The 10 myths mentioned are myths that are true for sites spamming incoming links but if your not spamming then there is less to worry about but not always.

Just look at The WordPress Experts - WPMU.org who were slammed by Penguin because their wordpress themes all had a footer links back to their main site which is a normal thing to do when you design and sell themes. The result was many low quality sites using their themes had a footer link back to wpmu and penguin decided that this was unacceptable and slammed their rankings. Massive Penguin mistake but it does highlight that you have to be careful even when you're working within google's terms and conditions. It goes without saying that if your manipulating rankings in any way you have to be extra careful.

That's another thing that pisses me off about Google. People work hard to create free quality themes for people to use, and they get penalized for it.

This hurts the people giving free stuff and makes them not want to offer their work anymore. It's sad, really.

#4 in that list is an easy one, you'll change your tune when competition out ranks your page with your own content.

    Good luck with that.

exactly what happened to me lol. Competition copied my content, published it on their site and ranked higher then me in search with MY content. Competitors of mine have even copied my content and released official press releases with PrimeZone with my domain name still in the copied content.

I agree. It's not your everyday SEO type of work that he is typically describing, but I don't begrudge the guy for the business he has built either.

SEOmoz is nothing more than marketing hype.

I get PMs all the time with people confused about SEO because of things they've followed on SEOmoz.

        Here's an example:

        [source: hxxp://www.seomoz.org/blog/setup-wordpress-for-seo-success]
You can put a post in many categories. And of course a category can hold many posts.
Really? You can drive a car off a cliff, but the end result isn't going to be very helpful.

All I'm thinking while reading that page is, wth is this crap doing on an SEO blog?

That's just a single example, I could post a lot more examples, it would only be a waste of time, because again, that site is marketing hype to deliver large amounts of traffic that don't know any better.

I guess I expect sites like that to actually know what their talking about, instead of posting things that will do more bad than good SEO wise.

Sometimes I feel like those folks at SEOMoz are exactly the same as journalists of some crappy newspapers. They have to come up with content everyday and when it comes to deadlines, because they have to have something to show up, they just wrap up some "random thoughts of the day" and put it on their blog just for the sake of posting "something."

I don't say that all of those blog posts are bad. In fact, some are really helpful. But it's not hard either for people to see some s***ty posts that received tons of "thumbs down"

But in the end, it's Fish's company and he has to try his best to keep it growing. We can't force him to go the other way

Yeah I wouldn't fault Rand for spewing his tripe... it's obviously working for him. He's got a massive following and polls "hundreds of SEO experts" when he releases data. But like always, filter things through your own brain and ask yourself "does this make sense to me?"

Your mileage may (and indeed, with Google it WILL) vary.
