Well it obviously plays a role eventhough after the penguin update it's not so important as it used to be, anyway thinking it from a marketing perspective and not just SEO it helps when people understand what your site is about from it's domain...

Keyword rich domains have an edge when it comes to backlinks especially sites that may allow backlings without anchor text.

A keyword rich domain name still carries some advantage as brand anchor text can be used more than other keywords as naturally people link to the brand name or root domain.

It seems that the EMD route, where you get ranking benefit just because you have an exact match domain, may be offer with Penguin but it still has teh advantage of giving you more room to anchor text the domain keyword.

Having keywords in domain name may have little impact on the search results but mostly the ranking depends upon the quality of the contents and the number of relevant backlinks.

  • Yes the keyword in the domain name still carries a little bit weight but not too much because Matt Cutts himself has said in one of his videos

With regards to adsense, keywords in domain still mean something. I did some testing and came to the conclusion the ads that display from adsense use the domain name as well as other factors to determine what ads to display.

No Panda or Penguin is taking down the power of a keyword rich domain name - as a mention : exact phrase match is more powerful than the partial match. It will always be the same - a brand will always carry it's name in the domain name. However, don't abuse this ... Google knows when / if you do.

Google and all Major Search Engines are focused more on User's Search Relevancy,
So I agree that higher the relevancy of your domain and search query the higher you will be ranked.(Provided you also have relevant content within that page & Good CTR).
