Analytics + Penguin = ???

Hi all,

post-Penguin (where some of our client sites have been hit) I've been wondering whether Google covertly uses Analytics data to measure what links and referring keywords/anchor texts sites are getting traffic for, and then based on that info let the Penguin loose. If that's the case, the obvious conclusion would be to immediately stop using Google Analytics for all sites, forever, and move on to some opensource tool like Piwik. On the other hand, they might not be doing it - at least there's never been any official statement saying that that I know of... but again, it's not like one can trust Google.

In our case, ALL of the sites hit by Penguin were using Analytics. A lot of the ones NOT hit by Penguin (despite having had pretty much the same SEO applied to them) were not using it (although some were).

So - does anyone else with a lot of SEO'd sites have any data to share on this question?

Best
Mike

If any bit of that is true, Google is going to lose a lot of Google Analytics users. I don't think they'd be that stupid.......but then again they did think google+ would revolutionize the world and stop North Korea's nuclear warhead program

It would be easy for them to cross refrence the analytics data as a signal for Penguin. It woudl allow greater accuracy for spotting sites that are "over optimised"

Stopping using G analytics would not help though. Google still knows what is happening with your site traffic.
