page ranking decreased after adding backlinks

My site is a new one and the page hits are 300 at first.
Last week, I have wrote articles and submitted them on blog sites. But the page hits and page ranking decreased today. I wonder if backlinks now are useless for page ranking. If so, should I stop submitting backlinks? Then what should I do to increase page ranking?

P.S. My site is about sitemap generation.

No, backlinks were never useless for PR... In fact, backlinks is the only way to increase the PR. If your PR has fallen down, this means you need more number of quality backlinks.
