MAGENTO SEO Concern...

Hi Guys,

So I am currently working on a new store which is basically an upgrade from a recent one. I am very confused on how to sort this out so here we go...

I have completed my categories and subcategories. When you click on the main category I only want image thumbnails to show in order to to select which sub category a customer wants to see. So the navigation is visual as opposed to text. Now the problem I have is that when I click on the main category i.e. via the navigation bar, it brings up the images and the meta description.

Here's the problem...

I have the meta description displaying in the main category and also for the sub category which is now classes as duplicate content. I can see options about which block you want per page, but I want the categories listed, as I want the image thumbnails to appear, just not the description.

Customer View:

* Clicks on the navigation bar and selects the primary navigation i.e. Toys.
* Customer can now see 12 different subcategories (image only linking to each one).
* Customer Clicks on a sub category.
* Customer can read text about the sub category and view products below.

Greatly appreciate your responses.

Steve.

    Hi Shaolinsteve,

It isn't quite clear to me exactly what you are asking when you say "meta description displaying in the main category". Technically, the meta description does not display in the browser. So, I assume you are talking about the category description. Please clarify this point and I will try to help.

Generally speaking, you want to have a unique meta description for each page. The meta description is embedded in the code and does not display in the browser.

The "Manage Categories" section in the Magento admin panel will allow you define the Category page Description, which displays on the page, separately from the Meta description, which is embedded in the page and not displayed in the browser.

Please clarify where you are having difficulty and I will try to help.

      Hi dburk,

Thanks for your reply. Sorry for the misinformation, I do mean the category description. I have unique meta descriptions for each page, however what I don't want is category descriptions. For example...

I want customers to click on the primary category i.e. from the navigation bar and then they view subcatergories via thumbnail images. Kind of like this website:

3graces.com/brands/payot-paris/categories <-- just copy and paste this link as it's displaying differently.

When you go into each subcategory it will then display everything as normal including a list of products. The aim is to make some navigation more visual as opposed to using text links.

I know content is important and I want my sub categories to have their descriptions showing once a customer has clicked on the into the subcategory itself, however for the primary navigations, I just want them to display image thumbnails of the sub categories. Does that make sense?

      Kindest Regards
      Steve.

        Hi Steve,

You should be able to do just that, by leaving the Description field blank on the main category pages. Have you tried that?

Also, do not add any products on the Category Products tab, save them for the sub categories.

          Hi Don,

Thanks for your reply. When you click on the sub category, I would like the description to be displayed on the sub category page itself. But for the primary category I just want them to display the thumbnail images.

          Example...

          * Customer is on the homepage.

          * Customer clicks a navigation category i.e. Toys.

          * Customer can see 12 thumbnail images, each going to a unique sub category such as Boys Toys, Girls Toys, Cheap Toys, Bath Toys etc...

          * Customer clicks Boys Toys.

          * Customer can now read the sub category description and view the selection of boys toys.

Anyone see where I am coming from? I hope that makes things more clearer.

          Thanks!

            Hi Steve,

I think I understand what you are trying to do, and I see no reason why you cannot do it just as I have suggested.

Don't get hung up on the fact that this is called a subcategory page in the Magento CMS. All of your "main" categories can be setup on what Magento calls "subcategory" pages. And then your sub categories can be arranged under those main categories. Just leave the description blank, and category products for the pages that you setup as your main categories, include the image (small image) and title and it will display just as you seem to be looking for, assuming your theme allows for this.
