Is Market Samurai still relevant in a post-Penguin world?

I'm looking at some of my niche sites that have recently been hit hard by the Penguin update, and ran the keywords through MS and it seems like not much has changed. I should be in the top 10 but Google for whatever reason doesn't like me. This leads me to wonder what relevance does MS have now if it can't tell me what to improve?

Also what about Alexa? I'm ranked WAY higher on Alexa than the site that's just above mine in Google, which is a ****ty site with outdated content. What good is Alexa now?

I played around with MS over a year ago. I found it to be pretty much worthless.

Only Google knows what they are up to and what they like and don't like. Subscribe to Matt Cutts. I've been listening to him for quite some time and my sites are doing great. All the recent Google updates have been very beneficial to me.

What I can say that don't depend on a software or system. See what Google wants.. Google Care about their search users so if you focus on search users rather than ranking in Google than it will be very easy to focus.

Focus on writing good quality content.. that is the thing you need to focus all the time

Google have mentioned that Do not check your ranking on any software or system. I think you have been using Market Samurai for check ranking purpose and that might affect your site..

My suggestion is all time do not check your ranking for any kind of software or system.

Add your sitemap to Google Webmaster and check your ranking in Google webmaster only..

I never used Market Samurai for anything, still I am doing good..

    I hope this helps you..

How can checking your ranking affect your site. How can google know that you are the site owner. I dont see how your IP address is linked to your website so dont see how your website would be affected.

  • Market samarai is just a tool for doing research. You have to understand the competition, the inbound links they have, the age of their pages, and many other factors to be able to compete with them. MS just helps you to analyze the data. Of course it is still relevant.

Keyword research doesn't really have anything to do with any of the recent Google updates. So MS is still relevant.

That said I much prefer the Google Keyword Tool + Traffic Travis + Calc to sort all of the data. (All free.)

There is no relation of recent google updates and keyword research and that is why I agree with "JSProjects"

I still finds Market Samurai one of the best keyword research tool available on internet.

Have you tried going straight to the source? (The Google Keyword Tool.)

Once you get the hang of building huge lists and sorting them with a spreadsheet program you can find a lot of REALLY good keywords:

Srsly? MS is a market research tool not a tool that tells you what to do and how to do them to move you back to the 1st SERP. It depends on you.

Alexa ranking means nothing IMO. The reason why your Alexa ranking is better might be you're receiving traffic from other keywords (both short and long tails) than your competitors do.

And don't be fooled by that number. I believe that Alexa can only track who visits what if that person has the Alexa toolbar installed and running in their Web browser. That's why when you compare two sites which receiving the same amount of daily visits, let say one from the "SEO" niche and the other in "men's watch" niche, 99% the site in the SEO niche will have much better Alexa ranking. Why? Because the guys who visit that site tend to be more familiar with the toolbar (and might have it installed already) more than the guys who are interested in men's watches (because they're normal people not other SEO's and Internet marketers).

    Just my 2 cents.
