On Page Overoptimization - How Much Is Too Much?

I'm building a new site and was wondering what the deal is these days with On Page Overoptimization....

In the 'old' days (seems like yesterday... oh, it was) you'd optimize your Title, H1, URL, Meta description with the keyword you are targeting... is this still the case today?

The standing recommendation was also to highlight (bold, italizise) your keyword once or twice in the text... is that still the case today?

Also, say I want to sell shoes (which I don't but you get the drift)... and I have categories for Adidas, Nike etc... would I be better off to have my menu navigation links say 'Adidas', 'Nike' etc. or 'Adidas Shoes'. 'Nike Shoes' etc...

Any help would be greatly appreciated :-)

Still helps, meta description isn't really for SEO.

Google knows Nike & Adidas are related to shoes, still, I would mention the word shoe on each page.

yup you should still optimize all these elements here is my Bad Example and Good Example:

    BAD EXAMPLE:

    <H1>main keyword</H1>
blah blah blah main keyword. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah main keyword blah blah blah blah blah blah bla.h blah blah blah blah blah main keyword blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah main keyword.

    <H2>main keyword</H2>
blah blah blah main keyword. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah main keyword blah blah blah blah blah blah bla.h blah blah blah blah blah main keyword blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah <link to another page> blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah main keyword.

    <H3>main keyword</H3>

blah blah blah main keyword. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah main keyword blah blah blah blah blah blah bla.h blah blah blah blah blah main keyword blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah main keyword.

so please excuse the silliness of all that, but just to make my point ive removed the blah from the good example please replace with a quality written article

    GOOD EXAMPLE:

    <H1>LSI including main keyword</H1>
article with main keyword in bold or LSI which includes main keyword (different from title)
link to another pages on your site so you have good interlinking
dont over use italics and underline only if its helps with the user experience!
    <H2>new LSI including main keyword</H2>
continue your good article no need to keep bolding or underline or itallics unless it help make your point use the main keyword in the last sentence
    <H3>another LSI including main keyword</H3>
finish your article or continue writing either way just keep it looking good and a great read for your readers - they are the ones who matter and they are the ones who matter to google - the smarter google gets the better they will be judging what content is worth showing and not - so keep that in mind !

now in each case the LSI should include the main keyword so you have it in the titles and heading tags, but the point is to make it look natural - if you read your article after and think - yeah this is 100% optimized (with Google-Eyes) for your main keyword then you have a problem If you read it and think yup, THE TOPIC covered in the article is the main keyword then its great
and you manage to optimize the article without being obvious.

    key points:
dont worry too much about keyword density - lower rather than too high ie. closer to 1% than 4% use lots of long tail (LSI keywords) - you will find them easy to rank for anyways so might as well target many keywords with one article to save yourself time and money.

best of luck! hope that helps

For the Title and Meta tags, you want to have the actualy title of the article - ie. your LSI (longtail) with the main keyword, and then int he description you use the main keyword in that too. and here it doenst need to be hidden inside a longtail keyword just make sure that its prominent maybe use it 2 times maximum, not more though. It still needs to be a good decription and this will impact your CTR on search listings!

All that stuff is still good. I think good meta descriptions are good for seo, using your keyword first before other words but that's just my opinion, many people here think they don't matter, everything else is still good on your list.

One thing I would say is over optimised is your signature link. It's unnatural you should link all the text including the stop words. You never know you may also rank for: wordpress security guide, improve wordpress security, free wordpress security guide, guide for improving wordpress security and free wordpress security checklist

the most important thing is your title. Your title should display the main theme of your page. Your title should have your keyword.

Just write the content for people and you should be fine. If you look at your site and it looks like you're trying to cram KW's into ever opportunity then change this.

I normally just fit the KW into the Title, H1 and Body. I don't fuss about exact match and mainly develop the content to read well for people.

There's a great software for that called IBP (Internet Business Promoter), which will help you (among other things) to see if you're doing things ok or not. Manually checking Onpage, doesn't make sense (really boring).

    Best Regards,

    Diego.

    Hi All,

Just finished a Brad Callen webinar.

Google is penalizing for "over optimization" of sites and web pages, so watch it and try to keep the keyword density of your main keyword phrase in the 1 to 2% range.

You can find a free keyword density checker by searching Google for "free keyword density checker" and then verify the percentage.

    Good luck!

Good stuff - yes, keep the keyword density to around 2% or lower (I still see slightly higher density on some #1 sites on hard keywords, but I'm conservative), sound totally natural, throw in some LSI keywords (I like LSIKeyword.com for getting those).

It all makes sense. If your page is about a particular topic (i.e. keyword), you'd expect it to be in the page title, headlines, also some in the text, near the beginning, and near the closing.

There's mixed data about whether putting the keyword in the meta description helps ranking.

However!!! SEO is about more than ranking. The real goal is lots of targeted traffic to your website from the search results pages. Putting the keyword in the page title and meta description will get you more clicks from people searching on that keyword, no matter where your site is in the rankings.

As far as on page optimization is concerned, it has not changed much... You still optimize your titles, descriptions, write good content, etc.
The things, that change are, anchor text placement... You have to place them, now, more intelligently.
Keyword density is less relevant now a days.
The only thing, that you have to care about is the quality of the content and its readability.

I think you will only have an issue if you use the same key phrase without any modification over and over in every sentence.
If you just focus on writing a natural article you should be fine. Actually many times I am writing an article I am trying to force myself to avoid using the keyword for as long as I can. But you will see that it is impossible to not use it once every 3-4 sentences (well obviously, since the whole text is about that keyword). Also try and use as many variation and synonyms of the keyword as you can.
