Footer links? advantage or disadvantage?

i've seen a lot of sites that have footer links with targeted keywords as their anchor text, and when clicked all the links go to the index page. so i was just wondering would it do any good for seo or is it a bad practice?

    I doubt it has much effect to be honest. Backlinking using anchortext to the same page is unlikely to have any effect.

        I haven't heard that this should be a problem in any way, but we cant really know unless we knew the Google Algorithms.

        The question is, why would you do it in the first place?

          i'm working on my brother's site which has few footer links. the website designers added those long ago. i wanted to remove them unless if there is no negative effect.
          shall i remove them or shall i keep it the way it is?

    Outbound links are different. Footer outbound links get less
    love.

    Internal links are golden, no matter where they are.

      That would be a different story even if different keywords are used and they're all pointing to the main page. It's like you're saying that the content they need is there. It would be a lot better if you're going to lead them to a page where there's information about the keyword used in the anchor text.

      I hope it would. but what is the benefit of having too many footer links with obviously money keywords as their anchor text that when clicked takes to the same index page that has no information at all? only a few information about the company but nothing about the keywords. wouldn't that be like keyword stuffing or something? idk.. i'm just asking.

    There is unuseful now as nobody will click footer link to drive traffic and will leave a footprint to google, and if you site have much page index by google, it's dangerous to your site get google pengiun problem.
