PPC Testing vs $$ Results

I ran a test recently with one of the highest ranking products on Clickbank. I also performed all the keyword research and the ad itself got fairly decent ranking from Google.
Here's the question:
Is it normal for the 1st day or 2 to be all out of pocket cost and then provided you've done your testing correctly start getting results from sales [assuming it's a product/service that has performed well]?
Any insights are welcomed and appreciated.
