Well as the title says.. How do I do it? I found a keyword with good traffic and little competition with 3 variations in the word eg: "tri-pod" , "tri pod" and "tripod"

So what would be the best/smartest way to rank for all 3? Will variations in my anchor text suffice?

    1. You can achieve this by varying anchor text.

    2. Create 3 completely different pages every one with unique title and content.

    - Additionally, build links to your root URL as well because this will flow power to pages and help you rank better.

You don't need to create 3 pages to rank for more than one keyword. My home business website home page alone rank for over 10 completely competitive keywords.

Simply optimize your webpage (title, keyword tag, alt, body e.t.c) with "tripod" and use your 3 keywords as anchor when building links. The search engine is smart and will not see any difference with "tripod", "tri pod", or "tri-pod".
