Newbie SEO needs help with a penalty

Hello everyone, I'm trying to learn about SEO and at the same time to achieve a good position for my site.
Unfortunately my site had a big drop in google serp yeesterday for my key phrase, and I’m not able to identify why.
I made three changes in the past days
-added a page to my site and updated the xml sitemap via google webmaster tools
-changed from a title tag with three key phrases to a title tag with only one key phrase, which corresponds to the site domain. I did this a week ago but the change in the result shown by google became visible only yesterday. (my site is, for example, make-a-site dot com and i’ve changed the title tag to “make a site”)
-created three or four backlinks from some wordpress blogs unrelated to the niche of my site that probably seemed spammy
-created a facebook page with some link to the $ site.
Then my position dropped from page two to page seventeen.
I’ve suddenly removed the links from the blogs and facebook and I’m starting again the old school backlink building (a couple of backlink a day with anchor text-rich links from wordpress, blogger or tumblr niche related blogs).
Plus I’ve changed again the title tag and added a second key phrase.
However I'm still on page seventeen... what should I do now?
