    If you are purchasing backlinks from someone and they are willing to enter into an agreement not to sell to any of your competitors, then yes. Otherwise, you are SOL.

    there's no way to mask it? or even try to throw somebody off, even just a little bit?

    someone asked me this question, and i have never really considered it too deeply. now that i think about it, that's rather bizarre that everything's right there for the taking if someone knows how to look up your backlinks.

      It is no different than offline advertising. You can track down where a business is placing ads, what TV spots they are using, radio ads, etc.

      There are a couple of things you can do to mask backlinks if they are off of your own sites, but if you don't own the sites, there is nothing you can do.

      You can block the spiders of the common backlink checkers in the .htaccess file so that they cannot access your site.

      Then if someone is using Ahrefs or Majestic or whatever to check your backlinks, they won't see them.
