Capitalizing on viral traffic

New to these forums but I see alot of good info. I was curious as to what some of you do when you get a huge traffic spike? In the last two days one of my post went viral and I have gotten almost 30,000 views. I kinda rushed and placed an ad on the bottom of the post but only received 9 clicks. I removed because I already had ads in sidebar and header and that is where all the clicks are coming from. Do more ads hurt your cpc?

It depends on what kinds of ads you're using.

It doesn't necessarily hurt the CPC but the more Adsense ads you have displayed on one page the less relevant some might be because they could run out of related ads.

That could lead to the non related ads having a lower CPC

Whenever I go viral, I do a couple things...

    1) Set up some way to capture the user and bring them back. This is usually done by getting them to sign up for an email list. (or like a Facebook page).

    2) I like to carry on the viral as long as I can - so adding onpage share/pin/stumble buttons to help keep the viral going.

Hopefully this helps gives you some ideas to work off of for next time!

Yes thanks. I did add a facebook like/share button and a twitter tweet/follow button. The facebook button has definitely helped to keep the viral going. It is going viral on stumble. I didnt realize how much that would help.

Any help on increasing CPC? I have had over 7,500 pageviews with 41 clicks and only $1.81!! Is this normal?

Viral marketing is an internet marketing term that refers to your message spreading to other people. Just like a cold virus spreads from person to person, your marketing message can be spread as well.

For my sites, I believe in setting it up to take advantage of ALL traffic at ALL times. Like an opt-in offer on the sidebar, something that links to other posts to get them to read more, social sharing buttons for easy sharing, etc. When something goes viral, just make sure you're encouraging people to comment and that you respond to their comments.

The post has been viral for over 3 days now, with almost 55,000 unique visitors. While this is great and has definitely motivated me, the traffic is not targeted and with almost 50 clicks a day with only a few dollars, it is also discouraging.

I have hard coded a twitter and facebook button that seems to have helped some. I also have a recent post feature that has gotten the traffic to hit other pages. My subscriptions have not risen much.
