Without seeing the site it is difficult to tell. The basic advice is to make the ads are embedded into your site's design. Embedded ads bring the best CTR.

I think if I would add adsense to my site I would start it with creating a site specific heatmap. It means that I would install clickheat and after identifying the hot spots I would add the code of the ads.

I have done some research in this area, using my own ads, over time on my blog. So far the best performing ads (a significant jump in CTR for me) was when I placed one 300 x 200 (ish) ad above every post, and one skyscraper in my sidebar, and one google search at the bottom of every post. I've tried unobtrusive ads, small rectangles, and I've tried inundating the viewer with ads. So far this is the best working technique for me.

Having said that, most of ad placement comes with experimenting where you place the ads on your site with the numbers your stats gather. Something that my user may have in so far as clickthrough behaviour may be entirely different from yours. It does depend on your template and site design, as where you are pointing the viewers eyes should have an exit point ad close to that spot.

There are wordpress plugins you can use to track your visitors behaviour while on your site - they record your visitors mouse behaviour and all sorts of things. As of yet I haven't grabbed one to try myself.

Right at the very top and so it will be the first thing that your web visitors see when they enter your page. Could be the leadaerboard size or even just a 468x60. Definitely text over graphic.

I've found that a large rectangle at the top of the page works best, but it's against the rules to have it directly below your heading. So I put a short paragraph, 2 or 3 lines, and then the ad.

It has been tested and proven, that the Ad that gets the most CTR is the large rectangle 336 X 280. Make sure the ad is next to some text, preferably an article to get maximum results.

      Best placing for adds is:
large bar on the top (under the title of the site or article)
right and/or left upper areas (near site menu)
on the bottom of the page (so visitors clicking after they finishing to read your page and have nothing to do but to click!)

Besides, if you want to know exactly your adds performance - use Google Analytic program or check "top channels" on your Adsense report page (near your Adsense list) - you can see which ad working better and its placing on your page!

The best thing to do is test it. Try one setup for a week and then another for the next week and compare CTR. Not all sites are the same, as other navigation points can distract from them.

The one that gets the most clicks for me is right in the post itself, just before the first paragraph.
