How difficult is it to rank above yahoo answers, answers.com, and dictionary.com?

This keyword I'm trying to rank for (shorter tail keyword, not my main keyword) is dominated by two yahoo answers, one wiki.answers.com, and one dictionary.reference.com entry.

There are a few other sites above me as well. I've been trying for a few days and can't seem to get anywhere. My site fluctuates day to day between the bottom of page 1 and top of 2, and makes it seem like my efforts aren't making any positive progress.

Is this keyword too difficult to rank for probably? Is it possible? Is yahoo answers, answers.com, and dictionary.com a sign that I probably shouldn't try?

Edit: Here's some more background. I wasn't originally trying to rank for this keyword. After being done with my main keyword and some other related keywords, I found out that I happened to get to page 1 for this keyword. It's twice as much traffic as my main keyword so I thought "Hey, I'm on page 1, might as well try to rank #1 for it." I've been up to #6-7, but haven't been able to get higher than that. But I've only been at it for about a week.

I just want to hear from your previous experiences in this type of situation and make sure I'm not wasting my time.

Typically I have found that it's a good sign to see those guys at the top. However, there are instances where it's difficult. Take a look at the other sites on the top ten. If they look strong then you may find a bit more difficulty. If they are weak sites, then you're pretty much golden.

Interesting, thanks for the insight. I will keep trying then, if those sites are usually a sign that the competition is weak. The fact that I got on the first page without even trying makes me think I can do it, and since it gets a lot more traffic than my main keyword it seems worth the effort.
