If you already have a general niche in mind then Google Adwords keyword tool is enough to identify where the long tail keywords will be. All you need to know is the exact match traffic and phrase match traffic.

Then use this equation to get the exact to phrase ratio - (EM/PM)*100=ETP Ratio (this gives you a percentage).

Some people prefer using a phrase to broad ratio - try both and decide for yourself. I like using phrase to broad ration for finding niches and exact match to phrase match for finding specific long tail keywords.

The lower the ratio, the more long tail keywords there tend to be. Then something like Ubersuggest (free) or Keyword Optimizer Pro (not free) to dig up the exact long tail keywords.

I use several keyword tools but for this particular task, doing the first step manually seems to be faster. You get all of the info in 20-30 minutes if you already have a general niche in mind.

To find out long tail keywords for your existing website, you should first check your website's stat where you can see some visits from long tail keywords as well. Prepare a list and repeat the same after every 3-4 days, you'll have enough key phrases to choose some important one.

Now you can go to google adword keyword toll to find out some more. Google's insight is also helpful in researching keywords.

      1. slow
      2. slow & clunky
      3. haven't tried
      4. has potential, still some bugs to work out, but is fast and has lots of data to display.

I'd also add Ultimate niche finder: fast, but lacks in competition analysis.

Best can be very subjective and of course it depends on your budget.

Google Adwords Keyword Tool plus the free version of Traffic Travis and/or SEOquake is a good place to start.

If you are going to be doing a lot of keyword research, then I highly recommend SECockpit.

    Disclaimer: totally self-promotional.

I know for a fact that WordStream's keyword tool hosts one of the biggest database of keywords - with over 1 trillion strings of combinations from various search engines, bookmark tools, and other bought lists.

It's free to 10 tries, the results can get very niche (which sounds like what you're looking for!)

But if you're looking for free, ubersuggest has gone a long way

For long tail keyword research and niche finder i usually prefer Google adword keyword tool. Sometimes i do it manually because it saves lots of time if you have a basic idea about the niche you are searching.

Undoubtably Google Adword Tool is the best because big G is where the money is. It's the only area that really proclaims "the best gift of life is Free".

A lot of people considered paid tool because they believe nothing good comes for free. Let me inform you today that all those so called paid keyword research/competition tool dig into Google to provide the info they give you.

Keyword research is one of the easiest part of IM, within a couple of hours you can have a handful of keywords (goldmine) to make up a highly profitable site and you only have to do this once for every site.

The best keyword tool I've ever used is google adwords.
They tell you what ratio of traffic flows through one term vs another.
The numbers are ONLY indexes. Google will NOT tell you how many PEOPLE do any search... they just give you a relative number

But the most surprising thing is to find that your customers are googling for terms you never imagined. that happens alot.

So to find the best keywords... just put yourself in the customer's shoes.
