Multiple XML sitemaps in the root?

Hi fellow warriors!

I have been looking for solution for my localization effort. We are in the process of translating some of the pages in our main website. So, I will be having country level directories at example.com/fr, example.com/de for "FR" and "DE" respectively

I currently have a sitemap.xml file at example.com/sitemap.xml. I don't think I can create a separate sitemap.xml file for these directories at example.com/fr/sitemap.xml, example.com/de/sitemap.xml since they are CMS driven where I cannot create virtual directories.

My Quesitstion is...

Can I create separate sitemaps for each country level directories and place them in the root folder?

For FR = sitemap_fr.xml
For DE = sitemap_de.xml
For EN = sitemap.xml

And connect all these sitemaps with "sitemap_index.xml" in the root folder?
