So just read this article and I guess there are a bunch of companies popping up that actually REMOVE links for you if you've received the "unnatural link" message or you just feel you were penalized for having .... bad links!

New Link Industry: Link Removal Companies

I've read some reviews on other forums and I guess these companies actually work.

I'm not sure exactly how they do it, they say have a platform that allows them to just remove links without even contacting the webmasters on different types of websites

I guess for the rest they just use whois and email the webmasters in hope they can get the link taken down....

Anyways this is pretty interesting stuff ESPECIALLY you've received the message from Google or your website has been slapped.

Removing bad links has been going on for awhile for SEO companies. Most of the time a company hires a crappy SEO company, pays them a few thousand dollars and get's ranked first page for a few months, then google slaps them.

That's where more legit SEO companies come in and pick up the pieces and try to undo the damage that's already been done.

Although I haven't heard of a method of removing bad links without contacting webmasters, that's pretty interesting.

Yeah but the focus of these companies is only the removal of links. It's a little different than the SEO companies removing a few links here and there trying to repair links

I personally would not remove links as it can appear to look unnatural to your link profile.

I would just dilute my current link profile with more junk links (different and random anchor text) to make everything look more natural.

If you have an unnatural links penalty that means your site's had a manual review. Diluting bad links will not remove the penalty. You need to remove the bad links.

I have a bunch of new clients who all want me to help them remove bad linkw as they have unnatural links detected penalties. The penalty can be removed through filing for reconsideration but you have demonstrate you've made a good effort to remove the bad links. Google will not lift the penalty just because you added better links to the link profile.

I agree with you. You have got remove the links its not unnatural infact even Google says to remove all the things which you might have been penalized for and wait for the things to get better.

But if you have bad links. You can also do it the other way. Just build more high quality natural links that the bad links don't matter much.

That could also work. I mean bad links are getting your site penalize, why not pay someone to remove them. But that is a gamble to because you can never know when Google will lift the penalty.

Well when the whole BMR fiasco happened a lot of people fixed their rankings by removing all the links they had from BMR

So if it worked then it should still work now

The thing this has got me wondering is how stable this business model is, as far as I was aware Google is planning on bringing in a new tool for disavowing links in the near future (possibly) .. this would make companies involved in this pointless wouldn't it? or would they be used more for 'reputation management' sort of thing?

Hey, adamjcd, I wonder the same.

And I also wonder who is behind these link removal companies (I'm not talking about SEO firms and SEO consultants who do it as part of bigger SEO campaigns). That reminds of how someone saw Nessie in the lake, and the next day different people arrived at the site, selling carved-out statues of the monster and offering pictures of it.

Does the unnatural links notice in GWT only come from having links on blog networks or does it also come from other types of link building?

It can come from other sources of links not just private / public blog networks. Being caught on a private blog network will almost guarantee an unnatural links penalty but you can get an unnatural links penalty from other manipulative strategies.

Penguin address low quality spam and over optimization. This can be resolved by diluting overly optimized anchor text with brand anchor text - if that's the problem.

GWT penalties such as the unnatural links penalties are manual reviews and are issued for more serious link building manipulation. The only way out of this is to remove as many bad links as poss and file for reconsideration.

Funny, because I have a friend who is a freelance web designer but given a link grading project from his client. Since I am the SEO, he keeps on asking me about how to qualify a spam link. But the point is, projects like removing links already is here. And since people are so conscious about how Google shapes their business for the future, this new branch of SEO will likely stay.

I can tell you what they are doing. It is complete bull****. I've seen a few messages in other forums from people this happened to. They send a DMCA notice to the webhost (technically, they are not contacting the webmaster) and the site gets taken down. DMCA's are supposed to be for copyright infringement, but most web hosts take them seriously. When they receive one, they will often take a website down pretty quickly and leave the webmaster to sort it out and resolve the situation.

So a webmaster contracts someone to build links for them (which ultimately the webmaster is responsible for), then has someone send out DMCA notices to get the sites pulled down even though the content was submitted on the authority of that same webmaster.

It is not what DMCA notices were intended for and is completely abusing them.

The link removal industry is dirtier than the SEO industry, and that is saying something.

I'm pretty sure there is already someone here playing both sides of the fence. I'm sure there are many others too.

I think I know who your talking about & If they are playing both sides (build links/remove links) they've covered their tracks pretty well, other than promoting both of the links here on WF at the same time.

Yeah, they have covered their tracks well, but it is nothing revolutionary.

I think the whole negative SEO thing is overrated, and likely not to exist much at all.
It's more along the lines of, if that's all you've got, then yeah, you wont rank well, and you're probably a spammer.
But think you could drop Adobe in the rankings by pushing some bad links to it? I dont think so.

Hey folks, I am behind one of those companies/tools that helps remove links (Remove 'em). One of the previous responders was correct that you cant just dilute your way out of manual penalties. It might be possible w/ Penguin, but not with "manual actions".

I do think that you need to be careful removing links - you should be pretty certain that links are the problem before you go start tinkering around with something as important as your link profile, especially considering it could hurt your rankings in Bing, even if you are penalized in Google.
