Back to #1 on G - at least for now. Woohoo! Here's how.

So, after all the Pandas and Penguins and other zoo animals hit one of my main money sites - I found the site still hanging strong in the top 20. Not the case with some of my other sites, but still happy this one didn't get hit so bad.

Now, several weeks ago I got an email from a couple of my fave seo guys, Dan Thies & Leslie Rohde, where they basically suggested that anyone who's been hit by any zoo animals as of late should do a "red ink" test (or "red pen/red line" test - can't remember).

Anyway, the "red ink" test is a simple test you do on your site using... well, red ink

What you want to do as suggested by Dan & Leslie is to take a printed copy of any "cached" (Google's cache that is) web page that's been hit. Then you simply want to draw a red line underneath all the main keywords that that page is optimized for.

After you've completed the task, you now want to sit back and simply look at the results. Now, if you see nothing but red ink all over the place, then know that that is exactly what Big G sees

And what you need to do now is simply reduce the number of keywords by about 1/2 - give or take.

Anywhoot, I followed their advice (kind of half-heartedly because I didn't want to print anything out so as not to waste paper and all...) and voila! Back to #1 again.

So, go grab a red pen and get to work! :p

Before even reading your post here I tried that with one of my sites that got hit hard (from #2 to all the way to page 25) where I pretty much lowered the main keyword that I was optimizing for to about 1/2 (it was used about 5 times in a 500 word content) and I used other LSI keywords as well and did some internal linking, but so far nothing and not only that my site is not even in the first 40 pages of the SERPs now for its main keyword.

So I don't know if just doing what you are suggesting will work for everyone. How long after you made the changes did your site jump back up to #1?

      Hi MrTrance,

Yeah, strongly doubt it will work for everyone. Sigh... such is the nature of SEO; but it still is worth a try.

Also, I noticed the jump back to the top in about 1-2 weeks. Not sure of the exact number of days as I wasn't paying too much attention. I just wanted to try it to see if it would work as I trust Dan Thies' and Leslie Rohde's advice.

      Best!

What sort of backlink profile did you have for this site? Did you have a high percentage of same anchor text to same page? Use an private blog networks?
