Quality backlinks never stopped working. The only major change has been a devaluation of spammy link portfolios and penalties dished out to specific blog networks.

The best way to collect these days are to:

1. Create content worthy of natural backlinks (ie. link bait)
2. High pr links from a private network <--- Legitimately private. None of this open to the world shenanigans.
3. Create own powerful backlinks with Magic Submitter or some other mass backlinking in tiers. (ie. Thousands of links point to feeder sites that pump link juice to your money site.)

Agreed. Quality backlinks never stop working. As to the best way to generate quality backlinks, create quality contents and use social networks, keep updating for months and you will see its amazing result. If you can keep doing it more than 1 year, you will know.

Hey Brendan-- I checked out Magic Submitter and see that it spins your content....no problems with that? Seems spun content often reads awkwardly and does not look natural at all...

If you have created a quality back link it would not stop working.We must take care while writing the content and creating back links because content is most important factor and should be unique and of high quality.

Of course. quality is key. Not spun junk on pages not indexed. They are pointless.
Why would Google value these, or profile links on a page with a million other profile links.

Blog commenting is still very important indeed. we should focus on building natural links that do not look spammy. We should comment as its our own blog because on our own blog we dont want to see spammy links, similarly other blog owners dont like it as well. So keep it natural and simple.

Quality backlinks are still the centerpiece of Google's ranking algorithms.

Most of their recent updates have been to determine the quality of backlinks, not penalise sites with backlinks.

Build 5 quality manual backlinks a day, whether that be web2.0s, blog comments, aritcle backlinks, directory backlinks or w/e and spread this across 4 tiers (with no order to any of it) and in a years time you will have a very powerful linking structure made up of thousands of links. Backlinks will always work until the Search Engines exists. I agree that the diversity in Link Types and Anchor Texts is what holding more weight in google's algorithm as of June 2012.
