Using Competitors' Backlinks a Good Strategy?

I have no idea why this thread got deleted, but anyway, here it is again.

Say I go to alexa.com, type in the domain name of a few of my competitors and try to generate the same backlinks they have. Is this a good strategy to follow? If so, do I need to point all the links in the direction of my homepage or multiple pages?

Thanks

It is always a good idea to see what backlinks your competitor have got and to copy it not always though see below). If it works for them and gets them high rankings then it should be good for you too.

Its always the first place I look to see what type of backlinks I should be aiming for.

Also if you notice your competitor has lots of spammy backlinks (eg forum profiles) then you know that if you stick to related quality backlinks you will outrank them anyway.

I always analyze the list of possible backlinks where my competitors have. It helps me a lot in all the cases.
