Hi Guys

I am new to the forum but know it comes highly recommended.

Anyway I am doing more and more online marketing for my clients and have just won a nice little contract to sort out the SEO for a local business.

With this in mind I have to undertake some keyword research, after reading lots of 'how to's' it actually seems sensible to ask you guys if my method is on point.

Okay So I am using the Google Adword Tool (I may go for Samurai or something like that later) and have generated a list of possible search terms, including my long tail search terms.

I have aimed at generating a list that Google says will have over 1M local searches a month ... have to say I am slightly suspicious about that.

All the terms have Low/Medium competition.

I have also checked the page rank for the top 3 sites against each term and most fall in about page rank 1 or 2. There are a few exceptions i.e. a couple of page rank 3's in the mix but generally the are all page rank 1 or 2.

I have NOT checked inbound links

1) Do I need to do this when assessing competitors?
2) What is the quickest FREE way to do it?

I understand that since Panda and Penguin the rules have changed i.e. so volume of inbound links can be bad. Also it is important to vary the quality of inbound links to avoid detection

Any guideance offered would be most appreciated.

As I learn and discover information I fully plan to post my findings here.
