It seems this definition is not so clear cut. Can anyone attempt to define it? What's your version?

Personally I think it's getting more clear cut now then ever with Google clamping down on paid links, other black/grey hat stuff.

I think of white hat as natural linking.

People linking to content because it's good content .. not because someone paid them to etc.

Another way I think of it is .. when you're link building .. do you feel comfortable explaining to Google what you're doing? .. if not then it's not white hat.

      adamjcd,

Your version is pure white hat. This is not practical for 99.99999% of all the businesses and marketers in the world. What's your take on that?

White hat SEO is SEO which looks naturally to Google. This means few new links to your site on a natural speed. Buying 10.000 links to be posted in one day seems unnatural to Google and they will be discounted. You need to drip feed them over a longer period.

Anchor text diversity is a must. It does not look naturally, that every single link have the same anchor text. Use different anchor texts which are related to your keywords. This is important to rank nowadays after the penguin algorithm update.

Also link diversity is a must. You need links from web 2.0 sites, high PR contextual backlinks, blog comments etc. to make it look naturally...

Imagine other people who likes your site. In how many possible ways can the link back to your site and from where...

White Hat SEO simply means natural traffic and backlinks to your site. What google thinks about White Hat SEO is not doing any SEO at all which is kinda weird.

You don't build the links to the website intentionally.

If someone on Yahoo! asks where can I get XXX and the answer is clearly on your website that you cannot actually type out to explain (Example of a chart) then linking would be fine. Other people linking to your site without you paying them or telling them to is whitehat to me and according to google, it is also
