Hit by penguin in april

Hi everyone. My site got hit by penguin on 24th april. Before then, my site was at number 12 in Google for my most competitive keyword. After penguin hit, my site was on the last page of Google for that keyword, at approx number 970. Since the penguin refresh in may, my site has came up to around 530 for that keyword. Of course this is still a very rubbish ranking to have, but is this even an 'improvement' as such?

Did anyone else get hit this badly by penguin? The problem with my site is that it is fairly new, so all links were built by me so far (practically no actual natural links). I'm almost certain penguin hit my site due to 'over optimized anchor text'.

For these in the same boat as me, how long do we keep trying for? I know the answer to this question will be different for everyone, but how much time is actually worth our time with regards to working to get our rankings back?

Would love some input from you all. Thanks!

Also, due to my site only being approx 10 months old, could this work to my advantage? What I mean is, gaining a 'balance' with my anchor texts may be easier for me since I don't have a whole lot of backlinks yet due to my site being under a year old?

you may want to continue building links and add content. When you add links, you need to make you have link diversity profile and anchor text variation.

I would completely stop building links yourself. That's the whole point of penguin. Self links are no longer supposed to work.

Instead I'd focus on getting other people to link to you naturally via linkbaiting or building content that people actually want to link to and social share without you needing to prompt them to do so.

That's really the only way I'm seeing any sort of results now.

I don't think your site's age makes a bit of difference.

  • A few clients of mine (they werent clients before the penguin) was hit by the penguin. I advised them to remove all spam links that their other link builder had built for them. And to start building quality links with anchor text diversity. Eventually they beat the penguin penalty.

It sounds like you don't have much invested in your website. As such, you might consider taking down the website and moving to a new domain, or in the alternative, keep the website, but build a new one with rewritten content. Obviously, this is easier if you don't have much content that you need to rewrite.

Another option is to try and correct your anchor over optimization problem. If you only have a small number of backlinks this will be pretty easy.

Trying to ride out the penalty and adding additional content may be throwing good money/time after bad.

    Good luck!

you need to read my report about seo after Penguin in signature.
And also try to build as many social links as you can to inner pages .

It is very importnat to diversify the anchored words and put links on inner pages for showing as natural as possible..

With this strategy i have curate 5 sites stroked by penguin by now. But the amount of social links depends on how many links have you built on main keywords.

    Cheers

Its impossible to answer your question accurately given the information you have provided.

The solution to the problem depends entirely on what you've done. Without knowing that, there's really no way we can help you.

Well put it this way, ahrefs.com is only showing 1115 backlinks for my site. How accurate is the backlink count at ahrefs.com?

I know that social bookmarking is a good idea, but I'm not quite sure of the best method to take. I've put up a new thread for that question though.
