Why people are still using blogroll/sitewide links?

People even talk about link exchanges being dead and that Google penalizes for exchanging links for the sole purpose of passing link value. But I still come accross a lot of sites who are still doing very well inspite of having a whole directory of links.
What you think?
#blogroll or sitewide #links #people

Blogroll and sitewide links work. Period. One of my clients site has a competitor that has a homepage footer link from one of those "make a website" websites just like weebly. He's probably paying a fortune to be there.

Not everyone is an SEO. Some people just blog because they want to and give out links because they find their readers will like them.

There is no penalty for outbound links. The only people who get hit by google are selling links out in the open.

This is an interesting topic. I am finally coming into my own writing a blog but am never sure the best way to get the rank up through the link exchange. I do remember reading somewhere that links really help with this but I have not read anything about being penalized for trading links or using others to get a lot of back links for your. Anyone have any for sure answers on this?

Its useful and I'm still doing it. Imagine this. You have a popular blog which you establish few years ago. Then this month you have a new site or business or service that you want to get some exposure. One way of doing it is to use your own resources which is put the URL in your popular blog going to that new site. The intention is not passing back link but introduce the new site. That's an instant traffic.

That way I see just don't put a lot of url in your blog roll. So far the traffic of my old blog is steady.

All of the links in my sidebar are affiliate links to products I actually use. I never link to my other sites as I don't want to create an artificial network, and I rarely ever link to anyone else's site, unless it's in a post where I'm giving them credit for something.

Yes, it still works. Don't believe those who say it does not work.

Agreed, blogroll links are still VERY effective. Doesn't have to be a blogroll link specifically but just almost any type of link at a high PR page.
