Should I Do SEO If I am Already Ranking?

This may sound like a stupid question coming from a fairly seasoned warrior, but does it make sense to SEO a site if it is already ranking? Let's say that the rankings are already on the first 1 or 2 pages, but not in the top 5 results, would it make sense to get a campaign going to help bump these positions up a bit, or is it too risky?

I am just wondering because I have generally abided by the slogan "If it aint broke, don't fix it..."

Let me know what you think....Thank you.

Rob

It is ok to do some SEO but I would stick to only high quality SEO like 2.0s with unique content or manual blog comments.

Those are things that will help give you a little boost, might take a little more time, but don't carry the risk that stuff like Scrapebox/Xrumer/Blog Networks might have.

If you don't mind that you're not in the top five then I guess leave it alone. If you think you know enough about what you are doing and you want to make seo improvements then go for it. Perhaps you can add additional pages where you can try out new SEO techinques, or a secondary site?

Page 1 is definitely not enough. You should aim for at least Top 3. That is where all the traffic is at.

Plus, who knows how many people will start competing for what you have too...competition is good, but you losing would not be good for you if someone comes in and takes your place...if that makes any sense

For my little experience i have seen a HUGE difference between 10th place 5 place and 1st 2nd place in term of UV,,, im totally agree with seoace you need to aim to the 3 place ..if there is a yahoo answers it doesnt count you can never be on top of them ,if you are 3 after 2 yahooanswers is like you are in 1st place

I wouldnt neglect avoiding to do SEO just because you are ranking, do some stuff moderately because without it you could lose rankings in the long run. I did the same a few years ago when i was ranked #1 and didnt do anything to keep up my ranking and lost a few spots.

Yeah I agree, and that is why I plan on doing SEO. As a matter of fact this is the same point the company brought up to me about SEO, "just because you are there today, doesn't mean you will be there tomorrow."

On the other hand, just because you do SEO today doesn't mean you'll be there tomorrow.

        Works both ways.

If you get on the top 3 you will get at least 80% more traffic. So the question should be , do you want more traffic or not?

Yes you still should since your competitors are doing SEO too and they might steal your rank if you don't do anything. It's like a race, you dont' stop when you are on the top rank, you need to continue what you are doing.

Don't do too much seo if you are already on ranking for your targeted keywords that means you are getting organic traffic from search engine. if you do seo again may be search engine penalize your website for over optimization. So keep sharing unique content through web2.0 sites and don't do any kind of submission right.

      Hope you understand.

As a seasoned SEO, you probably know that top 5 results get the most clicks. So, depending on competition, I'd definitely try to hit the top 5-pack.

But I agree with cardine, I'd be careful and would avoid outright black-hat techniques. Just analyze the competitors' profiles and see how tough it would be to outrank them.
