Searching for keywords in ""

Hello all, im still learning a lot through this site (its all there if you look) but I just have one question at the moment.

I have been looking at the competition for certain keywords using "...", now what confuses me is if I search without using these then obviously the competition rises dramatically. So whats with the " " in the first place? Im guessing its because whatever competition comes up it will only be competition to the exact keyword/phrases I use, where as if I remove the speech marks then it finds any competition with any number or order of keywords - is this right?

So to conclude, if I find low competition to a certain keyword/phrase, if someone searching was to use my exact keywords/phrases without using speech marks then Im guessing my site (if made correctly with the rights tags etc) would be closer to number 1 on the search engine?

Please tell me Im at least a little bit correct lol, something pinged in my head last night that made me think I at least understood this - hopefully it is the case!

using " " will give you the most accurate and fine result even words or phrases inside articles..

But people don't usually search using "" "" do they? Im just trying to understand how it will help if ordinary folk dont search like this. Unless as I said above if they do search for the exact keyword phrase that is included in my article then Im guessing this means my article will come out on top of the search engine, provided there isnt a lot of competition.

Sorry, not so much questioning it, more trying to understand it. Oh well it appears to work for you guys, guess i should just get on with it

Sometimes a top ranking in quotes will give you the same ranking in the normal search
results and other times it wont depending on how strong and the volume of your
competition. Using quotes is just a rough guide IMO.

That said, the only ranking that matters is the normal search results since most
        users search without using quotes.
