Amazon Review Sites - How do some links on google pg 1 prevail over amazon's own?

Hi everyone,

I'm in the techie niche with one of my amazon review sites and I've stumbled across something thats a bit mind boggling to me.

What I've learned in my experience with Amazon Review Sites is that no matter what your keyword your shooting for is... Amazon will pretty much always be #1 (and sometimes also #2) on google page 1 for the keyword term. Ususally I rank 2.

In some circumstances though I see some other amazon review sites ranking over amazon. So "random guy's" site is ranking 1, amazon is ranking 2 and I then rank 3.

What is this guy doing to beat out amazon?!

Is it backlinks or something I don't know about. The site is less than a year old, no PR and thrown together super fast.

Any ideas,

Thanks!

Backlinks and content. Amazon naturally ranks since it's such an authority site. But if you properly optimize your on-page SEO & content, you can outrank it with quality backlinks. It's not a guarantee, though. And sometimes it's just temporary luck. Especially with new sites. They tend to rank pretty well initially and fall off after awhile. (If there's no new content, backlinks, etc.)

I routinely outrank Amazon with my review sites. I do nothing special outside of targeting low-comp products. My sites require no backlinking in most cases so I don't bother to backlink outside of initial bookmarking/pinging.

Much has to do with the on-page SEO of the review site page and the content on the Amazon page.

Thanks again guys, I've been doing my research over the past few days and wanted to give you a little idea of my onpage seo

Here's the layout of my review pages:

      • Exact keyword in title
      • The title of the post has an H1 heading( but is part of the title)
      • about 200-350 words per post
      • 1-2% keyword density
      • picture of product
With knowing that what would you think the problem is (why is amazon outranking me)?

Do you think it could be the fact that the H1 heading is not in the post but part of the title? That's just the way the theme is set up

Also what about not having an H2 heading or H3? would those help my cause?

Also, should I shoot for more content? more than 250 or 300 words?

Last, Is there a post that tells you exactly about google on page SEO and what it should be? I've been searching but only finding subjective bits and pieces.

      Thanks guys!
