What do you guys normally do for page titles?

Do you have:

Keyword 1 | Keyword 2 | Company.co.uk

or

Keyword 1 we are the best in the UK | Company.co.uk

Were currently ranking #5 at the moment for the 2nd option above and I'm thinking of mixing it up a little and see what happens...

    Hi heft,

Testing variations is an important part of marketing. Since things like that will vary from one situation to another, one cannot assume that it will always be the same format that works the best in every case.

Including your keyword in the title is the key principle for boosting your rankings. Including it as the 1st word in your title gives your targeted keyword the most prominence within that element. However, there are other important factors to consider, your CTR in particular.

Getting higher ranking positions is only half the battle. You also need higher CTRs (Click-Through-Rates) to get that desired traffic. What good is it to have the #1 position if pages listed at positions 2 and 3 have more compelling titles and description snippets?

Once you are ranked in the top 5, it is your CTR that becomes the most important factor. Make your listing standout from the rest, and irresistibly compelling, by using page titles, and meta descriptions, that get clicks.

The thing is now, if we change the title tag a little do you think we will drop in rankings??

      Hi heft,

Yes, it is possible that your rankings will drop if you change your title. It is also possible that your rankings will go up.

Don't you want to know which title is best? The only way to get that answer is to test. Test, and then keep the title that gives the best return.

That is what marketing is mostly about, testing, analyzing, adapting and repeating, over and over again.
