What's the most SEO-friendly way to set up a blog?

To host it on an external service such as Blogspot with links pointing to your own url, or to install blogging software at your own url?

Which gives the maximum SEO impact?

You need to use "external services" as you call them (known as Web 2.0's) but only as a way to build backlinks to your main site... that should, IMHO, be on your own URL.

The thing to remember is that you want absolute control over your site, and that wouldn't be the case if you created it on a free platform like Blogspot. That's the best way to lose hours upon hours building a blog, to see it disappear one day for no apparent reason.

Make a Blogspot blog = Blogspot owns your work
Make a blog on your own URL = You own your work

    Now, the decision is yours

I have done tests, and there are certain occasions when blogspots do better than self hosted blogs. One of the biggest examples of this is putting a blogger blog in the description of a youtube video, it seems to rank better.

    However,

You would be an absolute IDIOT to ever try and build any type of business or brand on something that you don't have absolute control over.

Web 2.0 is powerful, and it's a great way to supplement existing websites (the google blog, the twitter blog, the alexa blog) but it's not how you should set up your existing site.

So to answer you question, it doesn't really matter what's better for seo. You do seo to get traffic and eventually an "action". And you'll get more "actions" in the long run on something that you control yourself.

Thanks to you both I was researching it and forming a similar opinion, but its good to have that confirmed

It seems Wordpress reviews pretty well for this purpose... would you agree with that? If not, what's better?

Wordpress does the job nicely. However, I think you can actually host a blogger blog on your domain as well. check out the link below for further info:

I am not sure if that will give you any SEO benefit. But I know of one really popular blog in the fitness niche hosted this way and the guys does quite nicely I think. However, I think a lot of his traffic comes from referrals but I think he does well from Google as well, but not 100% sure.

The advantage with wordpress over many other choices is that so many people use it, resulting in so many developers creating themes and plugins for it.

Whatever you choose though, definitely get your own domain and hosting package, they start out very cheap so it's an expense just about anyone can afford when getting started.
