SERP Meta Descriptions, Dates And Image Alt

I recently stopped putting the dates on my articles because
1. Older posts might give the impression of having out of date info.
2. So Google would not take up valuable Meta Description space in the SERPS character count by adding a date at the beginning.

Now I find that instead of adding the date, Google is putting the Alt description of the top image at the beginning of the meta description, which makes no sense to a reader scanning SERPS and still takes up valuable character count space.

I see some SERPS where the Meta Description has no date and no other non-useful words at the start either.

Is there a way to control that, so Google only uses the text I add in the SEO Meta Description box of All in One SEO pack, and no date or other unhelpful 'information'?

Carol.
