I use Market Samurai in combination with some good 'ol manual research using Google Keyword tool and Google Insights.

Market Samurai will also allow you to reverse engineer the top 10 SERP's for a specific keyword giving you info on how well they have done on-page SEO and info on their off-page links.

Got to agree with this 100%. , plus if you want your hand held a little google keywords tickle plus the google search in " speech marks" to verify total pages.

Additionally, here is a gem seen on here before...

Check the target keyword pages if you are serious with SEO spyglass plus alexa country audience, why you may ask, well it's surprising how your efforts can be wasted on the wrong country...

The tools mentioned bag it all, but can miss the country angle.

You don't need a paid software tool. All you need is the free Google keyword tool. Those results come directly from Google. Profitable niches are everywhere. Finding them is a learned skill. It's important that you also know keyword tools are only to be used as a guideline as they aren't 100% accurate.

IMHO: If you're just starting out, you don't need paid software. Use free Google searches. Get good at the process, build your sites. Once you have some traction, invest in paid software or tools. Not one red penny before though.

In terms of keyword research, I like to use tools that give you loads of long tail variations of your generic keyword that you can target and write lots of content out for the long tail traffic.

Paul Clifford has a WSO out at the moment for a tool like that which I would recommend for people looking to uncover some nice low competition, long tail keywords.

There are many keyword research software. But, what I personally feel that if you have experience in search engine optimization field, you can find business relevant keywords for your client websites. Keyword research tool will definitely help you find niche keywords for your client projects. You should also use your experience in finding or selecting keywords or phrases for website optimization services.

I prefer Market Samuria when it comes to paid keyword research tool, but if you are looking for any free tool, then Google Keyword planner is the best.
