Working with an old expired domain - lots of "dead" google links

I recently purchased a domain which the previous owner had left to drop, a pretty good EMD, so I'd like to use it. I've set up a new site, good fresh content etc., but I've noticed in Google WMT that it's found 180 crawl errors, all obviously pages on the old owners site which aren't on my new one, and so returning 401 to Google. This can't be doing my site's health in Google's eyes any good...

How would you normally deal with this situation? Is there anything I can do?

I'd probably ignore the old site's structure, if your intention isn't to resurrect it. One option you have to is 301 all of the old pages to your homepage, but there is some debate about whether this does more harm than good.

If the old content is directly related to your new content, then I would set up 301 redirects some of the link juice.
