So, I have just started working SEO on this brand new Ecommerce site but run into a few problems.

My products don't have much in the form of descriptions really and there is not too much content on the site to speak of.

How then do you get search engine traffic and rankings to something like this?

Anyone out there who's done SEO on an ecommerce site before?

Hey, i do SEO for an ecommerce company now.

You need to write (or have someone write) descriptions for every product. Talk about the benefits AND the features. Make them each around 170 words each. Make sure to optimize them etc. Pick 10-15 of your main categories and start to optimize for those keywords. If you need to learn how to build links properly search the forum

    • Write unique descriptions for your products and encourage your customers to leave feedback. Don't just copy and paste the description from the manufacturer's site because there are hundreds of other merchants who are using the same content. You can also write a few articles describing the purpose and benefits of your purpose. Post some articles on your site or create a blog. You can use a few of them as guest posts or submit them to article directories.

    Thanks for the inputs.

I'm going to start a blog soon and post some articles there to get a headstart and write lengthier descriptions for the products.

You don't need to make a new blog.. in your product hire someone so they can write the 200-300 words products description... that's it..

As already suggested, take advantage of your product description to leverage onpage optimization. This should include the title tags as the product name, descriptive text that describes the product, keyword rich 'relevant' images, and other mediums such as video, audio and PDF.

Be sure to use categories within your site so that your products/navigation/seo are structured properly.

One of the problems I'm having is that a lot of my products are pretty self explanatory. For eg- A leather belt. There is not a lot to write by way of product description,if you understand what I mean.

That's^ what's putting me in a tight spot as far as product descriptions are concerned.
