Untapped Keywords/Traffic

This is a side project I've been working on for finding untapped highly relevant keywords to add additional traffic for my existing ranked pages.

What I'm doing is scraping keywords from Google SERPs. I'm only scraping the first page per keyword (for now).

Here's a screenshot of the scraper program:

If you look at the screenshot my Google search query is best camp stove.

Now the good stuff...

Notice the 31 scraped keywords on the right side of the screenshot:
  • Camp Stoves
  • Camping Stoves
  • CampStoves
  • Stove
  • Camping
  • best Camping Stoves
  • Best
  • Stoves
  • good
  • Backpacking Stove
  • Backpacking stoves
  • backpacking
  • stove
  • Best Camping Stove
  • top camping stoves
  • Best camping stoves
  • best
  • camping
  • stoves
  • Best Camping Stoves
  • Backpacking Stoves
  • backpacking stoves
  • Camp Stove
  • camp stove
  • camp
  • Top
  • best backpacking stoves
  • camping stove
  • Camping stoves
  • top
  • Camping Stove

So, Google is saying these two keywords have the exact same meaning (as far as Google is concerned):
  • Backpacking Stove
  • best camp stove

This is only an example keyword, I did a quick Google Keyword Tool data check & Google says the new keyword gets 1,000 Local/Exact traffic per month.

So basically add in some additional SEO for the new keyword (Backpacking Stove) to the existing ranked page (best camp stove).

One thing I've noticed is the keyword scraper program tends to get better/more new keywords when searching for singular keywords.

The list could also be used for anchor-text variation & still target the root keyword at the same time, since Google is saying all these words in the list have the exact same meaning, again not always synonyms.

[edit]
I've attached the Keyword Scraper program in a zip file below. If your running Win7 or WinXP all you should have to do is double click the app icon inside the zip file (no installation).

      Anytime you do a Google Search, Google will <bold> all the keywords on the search page that they think is highly relevant to the search phrase. The relevant keywords don't necessarily have to be synonyms, like the example keywords in OP are basically the same exact word as far as Google search is concerned;
      • best camp stove
      • Backpacking Stove

Obviously the words camp & backpacking are related, but Google thinks they are the exact same things.

In the OP, the large text-box on the left is the Google SERP results html for the root keyword best camp stove, the large text box on the right is the finished scraped results from any word on the SERP page that is wrapped in a tag.

I've programmed the scraper to remove [exact] duplicate spelling & the finished text box on the right is also case sensitive for each keyword it finds. So even If you see multiple instances of the same keyword in the right text box, there's at least 1 letter/case on the word that is 100% unique compared to the rest of the keywords in the finished list.

Right now all I'm concerned with is finding those new keywords that Google thinks have the exact same meaning of my keywords that I already have ranked.

I'm not just looking for random new keywords in the same niche, I'm looking for keywords that have additional traffic to increase traffic flow for what Google thinks are the same exact keywords, even though the keywords are not the exact same to a human.

To you & I those two keywords aren't the exact same, but If Google thinks both keywords are the same then a little more focused SEO on the new keyword (example: Backpacking Stove) should be easier to rank for, assuming we already rank for the root keyword (example: best camp stove) or at least have some authority built up for the root keyword.

Something else I've found while running this keyword scraper program. Google treats these words as being the exact same words:
      • best
      • good
      • top
      • great

So, If my keyword is best camp stove, I need to be building anchor-text & plain text keywords like:
      • best camp stove
      • good camp stove
      • top camp stove
      • great camp stove

Google thinks those 4 keyword phrases above are the exact same keyword phrases.

      [edit]
I should also be able to use these keyword phrases & have Google think they are the same exact keywords as the root keyword (best camp stove):
      • best backpacking stove
      • good backpacking stove
      • top backpacking stove
      • great backpacking stove

Nice post to read. But as you said the keywords are not the exact same to human so how many quality traffic you are getting? Lets say I am searching for the phrase

        Solar Power

Now on first spot If I found your website "yukonssolarpanel.com". I might browse your site. When I would see the site is on Solar Panels I would not browse second page and move on surely.

So question is are you just looking to increase traffic not looking on conversions?

PS: I have downloaded the program. Its looking good to me. Thanks for sharing.

    Nice work!

I believe you can get much more useful keywords by scrapping Google's auto complete key phrases and related searches suggestions.

Do you plan to release this tool publicly?

The Google auto complete keywords are a whole other thing, those keywords are related keywords. I'm looking for the keywords that Google thinks are the [exact] same which there's a lot more keywords that exist in Google SERPs that aren't necessarily synonyms, still Google thinks those keywords are the [exact] same.

Here's another example keyword search with the scraper, the root keyword is solar power, notice the additional keywords that Google says have the exact same meaning.
    • Solar
    • solar
    • Power
    • power
    • Solar Panels
    • Panel
    • Solar power
    • solar power
    • solar panels
    • panels
    • Solar Power
    • SolarPower
    • solarpower
    • solar energy
    • energy
    • Solar Energy
    • solarenergy
    • Energy
    • panel

Obviously the root keyword (solar power) would be associated with the new keyword solar energy, what's very unexpected (IMO) is Google thinks the keyword phrase solar panels is basically the same as the root keyword (solar power).

I'll post the scraper software (free) in OP after I tidy up the source code & add a revision #.

This software only runs on Windows & has only been tested on Win7 & WinXP.

Been doing this manually for a while. Not only do you get additional traffic but if you're trying to rank your homepage for 3-4 keyphrases that all mean the same thing in Google's eyes, the effects of links built with each keyword anchor reverberate and boost the other terms as well. So by building links for 1 phrase you are building for the other keywords to a lesser extent. It helps with anchor text diversity as well.

      Nice tool Yukon!

Yep, that's the plan, but it's more than just keywords for anchor-text. The new relevant keywords can be added into already ranking pages as plain text, included in page titles, image alt-text, <h> tags, etc... Just gives you more options while targeting an exact keyword, only with new/fresh keywords & also target the new keyword traffic at the same time.

        Win/win.

    2 questions...

    1. Im assuming this digs 10 pages deep in the SERPS, yes? Is there any way to set it to dig deeper? I know often you'll find related terms further down in the paging. Not sure if thats possible, just thought Id ask.

    2. I think you're onto a winner here. Why aren't you charging for this?

Oh, one other thing....(and I'm not sure if you're already doing this or not, but by my tests here you aren't) ...force a TILDE search.

For eg...do a search within Google for cheap, then compare it using ~cheap.

You will get a much better collection of keywords.

      1) No, right now it's only downloading the first SERP page into the left text box, then the the Scrape button is grabbing all the <b> (bold) keywords from the left text box html code.

I could dig deeper into the search pages, but then it brings up some issues like I don't want to get into working with proxies (grabbing all the SERP pages in a single search). When you do a regular Google search in your browser, Google will temporarily shut you down If you start searching too fast, that's the reason I've made this a manual search tool (to avoid the temp. SERP shutdown).

I could grab those additional SERP pages without proxies by setting a Timer in VB.net, it would be slow, on the other hand it would avoid the temp. Google SERP shutdown. We could always search the keyword in the scraper, then minimize the scraper & do other work, or whatever... I'll look into it.

      2) Really this is just a tool I made for myself & thought I would share what I'm doing.

      3) You bring up a good point with the tilde search, my only concern is if it skews the default search results too much. It's defiantly a good search operator to flush out synonyms. I might add that as an optional search parameter. Thanks for the idea.

This is a pretty interesting method. I'm not sure they all mean the same thing, and don't see any really surprising, undiscovered, or hidden keywords in that list. Even sitting down without a keyword tool, you could have came up with that particular list.

The are targeted though. Would love to see where the rabbit hole take you...
