No Such Thing As True "Auto Pilot"?

Hey guys,

For those who have read my other posts, you know other than being a total marketing noob.. I'm a question asker and an answer seeker! lol

So my question today is in regards to niche/micro niche sites.

We all know that SEO and Backlinks are one of the two most important equations to any site's success.

I've read a lot of "marketing gurus" talk about how they make XYZ from their micro/niche on "auto pilot"....but I guess I am a little confused.

I've read you need to make sure you provide new content to your site in order for the search engines to keep "liking you" so how can this whole auto pilot thing really work?

Sure, outsourcing your work and outsourcing articles and what-not is viable, but I guess what I'm asking is how often after you rank with Google should you be submitting new content?

Is there truly such thing as an auto pilot?

It depends on the niche, in most cases. There are sites that
you can set and forget. People misquote google all the time,
or take them out of context. Unique and fresh content are
two of those. You don't need unique or new content in a lot
    of cases.

If you have a site on cell phone reviews, which is junk
anyway, no more of those are needed, but you probably
need to do articles each day to keep up.

If you have a site on gardening problems, you can set that
and forget it. You do articles on solving common gardening
    problems. Not much updating needed.

People take the fresh and unique and turn it into something
it's not. They think fresh and unique is somehow fresh
and unique, when it's just garbage.

Start a truly refreshing website. Start something that is
new and unique. Even presenting the same old tired
content in a new, unique, and valuable way.

Getting back to the autopilot. If you have a site that
answers the question, how to get rid of weeds, how
much updating do you think is needed? Not much.
From there it's more of a promotional thing.

I personally think people should spend more time
on website promotion, and not on gimmicky content.

That is, assuming you don't have a junk-tired-spammy-
    topic-review-crapola-site. Google doesn't want those.
    Unique content or not.

I do have blogs associated with all of my content sites.
That's where I do commentary, adjunct stuff, etc. to
promote the sites that for me are mostly autopilot.

But I promote them like a mutha.

Thanks for that awesome reply, Paul.

That's why I've had such a hard time finding a good niche. I've used Market Samurai, Jaaxy and Adwords to try to find a good idea but everything that I think could be a good idea has WAY too much competition or not enough searches. I've even came up with one that I thought could be a sure fire unique niche but after doing the research I felt like it would be impossible to rank. (I'd be more than happy to share it with you in a PM if you'd like in hopes of having helpful advice.)

It's just one of those things, most niches I could easily write 1-2 articles about it. But I don't want to put out crap. I want to build these niche sites up to eventually be a part of a "bigger" picture type deal.
