Hi!
I have a website and I notice that I have some articles on google first page and lots of second page, without doing any backlinks for that articles. I did very good on page SEO, have great content, but no backlinks.
So I just want to ask SEO gurus if is enough to just have great content, great on page SEO to hit first page on google without any backlinks.
Is this the future: on page seo and great content?
Is Backlinking strategy dead?
Thank you !

That's what Google would like you to believe. Great content, perfect onpage is good, if you have strong social signals, even better, but in most cases backlinks will also be necessary, depending on the keyword competition.

You can get first page without any link if the keyword has very low competition.

Great content has nothing to do with ranking but perfect onpage SEO does.

Although having great content that people link to is strongly recommended by Google. Getting in the first of Google without back-links may occur as a result of your site being in a niche that is not competitive enough. If that the case, I'd suggest you to create a site in the niche of "Web hosting, Insurance, Forex trading etc... and see if the same thing would happen. I bet It would not.

To achieve what you've just achieved with your site in the niches that I've just mentioned above, link-building would be vital. To summarize that, back-link will never be dead, and it's still going to be necessary if you want to achieve top ranking in a competitive market.

Yeah it happens if it is low competition. Quite a few of my sites will end up being 4th or 5th within 24hours of creating them because of good keyword research.

Obviously for more competitive terms you need good backlinks, emphasis on good quality links rather than quantity.

10 links from high authority sites is better than 10,000 from bull**** spammy sites.

How long has your site been up for?...

If it is under a month old and there is keyword competition then expect to potentially drop in serps. Then a little dance while google works out where your site belongs.

Almost impossible.. the only exception is if you are targeting an extremely untapped keyword with no real competition. But the problem with these types of KWs is 9 times out of 10, they are worthless and either bring no traffic or revenue-thus, the reason they are untapped... I speak from trial and error by the way.

nope there are many keywords out there which are valuable with decent search numbers and you CAN rank in the top 10 at the very least without backlinks.

It's just a question about whether you're prepared to put the time in to find these keywords.

You can do this with keywords that have VERY weak to no competition. Other than that you're going to need to start backlinking. Google would love for you to think that "creating good content" will help you rank. But there's a lot more to it.
