Aside from removing the underperforming adverts is there any other way of optimising adsense to gain a better CTR?

I think it depends where your CTR is at right now?

Personally I think it is better to not try and get a high CTR, it can arouse suspicion with the adsense police.

I believe one of the safest options is to just keep writing new posts base on long tails of whatever keywords you are ranking for now. Filling out an adsense site with more content (especially if it is already getting traffic, which I assume it is if you have a CTR), helps bring more traffic and therefore more clicks.

yes I completly agree, but there must still be best practices and ways to optimise the ads? Id rather have fewer ads for my visitors if they were more relevant. can this only be done by narrowing down the content then?

The only things in your control with adsense ads is to block ads you don't want, and what content you post on a page to give adsense an idea of what your page is about.

Even though you can block ads, you can't choose the ones you want.

To be honest, I have never gone back and changed content on page to try and "effect" adsense ads. I just write a relevant post for the topic title, and make sure I got the keywords in there that I want to target. Other than that, I don't think there is much you can do. Just scale up :-)

BTW, you living in Cardiff? I was there for 5 months recently before heading for Espania.

You can use the CTR theme, which automatically changes the positions of your ads on your site and track which works best.

It's a good theme with a very simple layout. I think the simpler an AdSense site, the better.

Simple to the point that it's ugly is often the better way to go to increase conversions. You'll be surprised.

As for the site in your sig... statistically, having a leaderboard will outperform the two small banners you have at the top.
