Why has my page rank gone down?

I don't understand what exactly happened. My PR gone down from 4 to 3. We are running a web hosting site and i had made lot of ON page changes in last 2 months. Besides we are regularly building quality Dofollow backlinks.

Does over modification of ON page codes can lower down PR ?

Suggestions are welcome for improving page rank. Please suggest particularly ON page SEO.

    it is very hard To Know all the reasons But you have to keep in mind the knew algoritm of google called "penguin" . You can read many thongs about it in google.

    It's primarily in your backlinks. If you didn't lose any since the last update, then Google likely devalued some of your current links.

    Making the Jump from PageRank 3-4 is one of the most difficult hurldes for webmasters to make when it comes to the PageRank scale..

    I too dropped down to PageRank 3 recently, but my traffic tripled on a daily basis about a week before that. So I wouldn't worry too much about your PageRank.

    Continue to focus on quality content and links, then everything else will fall into place.

    The backlinks, either they got removed or devalued. For an example, you are now down at 3 from 4. Now the sites you are linking will drop in PR too. The only way to ensure PR is:

    #1 keep the old PR links
    #2 keep building new high PR links
    #3 control your outgoing links

    It is likely that you have lost some key links that helped to drive the PR, this could be that sites have removed your link or the entire site has been deindexed by Google.

    Just keep building links and it will come back

    Google might have detected any unnatural links. Yes, there are chance to get rank decrease due to over optimization. One of my site gone down from PR1 -PR0 now :-(

    There is nothing certain when it come to Google algorithm ..so don't kill yourself over it..Anyways.. over optimization might have had somewhat negative impact on your site but your decrease in PageRank could have been due to the quality of backlinks u have..

    Focus on building quality backlinks from high authority sites in your niche or related areas.. Ideally backlinks from high PR pages ...you can consider getting contextual links that are placed within the content of sites..Stay away from backlinks from bad network of sites especially links placed in Menu/sidebar or footer..
