Thanks for your input. I was really upset when they removed the comments because there was a lot of useful information before the thread was closed. They should have at least left the comments in place in that thread, because they were all useful.

I'm asking about individual efforts from marketers, not 'in general'. I have a ton of experience with keyword research, and honestly, enjoy the subject.

A lot of people seem to hate keyword and research, and I wanted to see how others do research in their own world. I intentionally left the question short, to encourage more people to comment.

Personally, I like to use tools a lot and cross-check the different results. Once I have a few winners, most of the time I use common sense and my gut to decide if a KW is going to be profitable or not, how hard it would be to rank, etc.

I recently started using a rather new KWR tool. It's called Micro Niche Finder and I really like it.

What it does is, you put in your main keyword, it fetches the usual 800 suggestions from the Google AdWords Keyword Tool but then it goes further, because it fetches 800 additional suggestions for each of the initial 800 keywords.

It also does competition analysis and shows the CPCs for the keywords. The competition module can give you a general idea about the competitiveness of the keywords, but the fact is, you'll probably also need to check the top ten results for the keywords.

Still, it's a great tool to get you started with your keyword research.

Here is how I do the keyword research:

    1. First of all I prepare a set of the keywords which I will be offering as Services or Solutions.

    2. Then I enter those keywords in the keyword research tool to look for the related keywords, search volume and the competition. I like SEMRush and Google Adwords Keyword Tool.

    3. I pick up keywords with high search volume, high popularity (Popularity is the number of times a keyword has appeared in Keyword Research Tools.) and medium competition (Competition is the number of websites when a keyword is searched.).

    4. Then I find out KEI. Keyword Effectiveness Index: KEI compares Popularity with the number of competing web pages to pinpoint exactly which keywords are most effective for your website.

    5. And then KOI. Keyword Opportunity Index: KOI compares the Popularity with the number of competing web pages using "Allinanchor" operator.

And when I am done with all this, I choose the keywords based on all the data.

The most important information that Google Adwords Keyword Tool does NOT give you is the competition strength of keywords.

That is an absolutely critical part of keyword research that many, many people get wrong.

What do you think of an idea of being able to just browse through tens of thousands of most searched keywords and just picking the least competitive ones? Without even having to come up with any seed keyword ideas?

That's how I do my keywords research. Here's a free preview. Free - Keyword list

My first step for keyword research is always the Google Keyword Tool exact match to get an indication of how many searches there are.

The only thing to keep in mind if using the Google Keyword Tool is that their competition strength info is only regarding the PPC competition, so if you are not going to use PPC then that should be discarded.

Since our main goal is to take the top spot (or at least the top 3) we really need to analyze ONLY those sites. The # of competitors means nothing. The strength of the competitors means everything.

And so how do you check just how strong those top 3 are? ... The most effective method for me is to use a combination of tools.

I use TrafficTravis to give me a broad view of my competition. It shows me age of the domain, PR, # of backlinks, and how well optimized the pages are.

If I like what I see and think I might have a shot at landing in the top 3, then I will use SEOSpyglass to really dig down and analyze what kind of links are pointing to these pages. I look for # of referring domains, whether or not they are using the keywords as their anchor, and of course how powerful those backlinks are. Are they from high PR TLDs or high PR pages? How many do they have? etc.

This should give you all of the information you will need to make a better determination of just how much work it will take to land that top spot.
