I'm a web designer. I'm very farmiliar with SEO from a web design standpoint (Good keyword rich content, good clean code, images properly titled & named, site structure, redirects to fix canonical issues)

I don't have any firsthand experience with link building or article marketing and was going to start looking into it more but I don't want to waste my time if article marketing is dead!

What should I be focusing on (other than good quality content) for SEO in 2012? Thanks for any help you guys can give me on the crazy and ever changing world of SEO!

The main thing that has been changing in the Google Panda/Penguin updates is like you said good quality and unique content. I have been apart of the SEO community for about five years now. Alot of us have been going with linkwheels and linkpyramids; both are very useful and effective. Another big change has been diversity; trying using more and more methods of linkbuilding to be more successful! Hope this helped!

    Thanks

And then you'll spend a couple more hours going through the related threads too... at least i did. The stuff in there was better info than most of the products i've ever bought

In my opinion, SEO is on it's way out the door.

The future is going to be social proof. Aside from basic SEO, I'm not really bothering, at all.

My advice would be to focus more on social networks/sharing/article syndication/making content viral/etc rather than SEO.

Oh man MY HEAD, so many opposing views.

I had never heard anyone say that duplicate content across different domains is not duplicate content but in fact syndicated content as Alexa Smith seems to preach.

The URL she uses to prove this is talked about on this SEOMOZ forum. I want to know if this is bogus or not: | SEOmoz Q&A Interesting..

    Hmm a lot to consider

Obviously SEO is the best way to get traffic. Once you have steady streams of traffic you don't need to do anything.

But use links to drive traffic rather than spam.

Link building does come within SEO. Specifically, it's "off-page SEO". Naturally acquired backlinks from relevant sites are among the things that help your own site to rank well in Google's SERP's. Article marketing isn't intrinsically about SEO. It's a method of generating targeted traffic in its own right. This thread (and the links within it) explain in great detail: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post5068872

Article marketing is if you're seeking to generate leads from the posted article. I.E, someone reads the article, clicks the link, and signs up to the offer.

Posting articles for SEO is essentially just posting content for a backlink and its not just limited to articles.

Essentially, its article marketing if you don't have you're own site and are just using posts to promote an affiliate offer.

Until lately my circle has mainly been SEOMOZ and other large authority seo sources. And like I said I am new to outside SEO and am mainly familiar with onsite SEO optimization as I have been a web designer not an internet marketer up until this point.

I found this video very interesting http://www.seomoz.org/blog/article-m...teboard-friday regarding article marketing, duplicate content and such..

If you go outside the IM niche, article marketing isn't dead at all.

I was in the stock business for 9 years. I used to write articles on Ezine and tell my prospects I "had a few articles published". I'd even send them over to read them. It worked but of course the content was good and I wasn't really using it for SEO purposes.

Depends on how you go about it really. Alexa has been talking about the difference between article directory marketing and article marketing extensively. Seems like those who are just in it for the backlink (where the actual article is merely a necessary evil) might be struggling these days.

Can't say it makes me too sad.

Why don't you try some things that take your fancy and see what works out the best. Once you know what's bringing you the most traffic you can concentrate on that.

Over time your rankings will improve, but you'll have developed a strategy to bring in traffic without the search engines.

What I'm going to do is eventually come up with something I can drive paid traffic to. F**k this working hard stuff lol.

Syndicate only unique content or content first published on your site to top article directories, no need mass submitting to thousands of site...

If you mean submitting to the article directories... then yes, this is dead. In the days where you could get 50-80 clicks per day from your articles.... you're lucky if you get 40 within 1 whole month.

Swap it with another strategy. Try Youtube.

I'm not Randall, but I've had a few posts bring in about 200 visitors. It's not bad for something that takes 5 minutes, though you get some that bomb.

If you use a technique found here somewhere on the warrior forum (can't find the thread).
He describes his backlinking technique and what he does is make two layers off back links to his site. The first layer is article directories, web 2.0, and blogs. The first layer links back to the site. The Second layer links to the first layer. This is where he does mass article submissions and social bookmarking.

I know this backlinking technique was posted a few years back, but I'm not sure if its outdated. I have yet to implement it to my site.

Article marketing still has its place, but not as powerful as it used to be and compared with other linking stratergies isn´t really worth the time.

Yes, I agree with this point, and it is still useful if you submit article to directory to get dofollow backlinks. meanwhile, the whole impact from off-page seo is not as powerful as it use.

Article Marketing is not dead, You just can not do the same old tatic such as submiting article to thousand article directories as well as sending spun article to public blog network that get catch by Google or so.

Be smart, and focus of quality backlink such as making your own private blog network, guest post.

      Hi..

Article Marketing is a power of SEO. Article reproductions are slightly down from Google panda and Penguin updates. But, i am still using article marketing techniques to get keyword SERP and backlinks..

I guess article marketing is still alive but if you are posting the duplicate content in your article then it will surely be dead for you.Try posting article on high PR article directories.

My focus has always been on SEO and Social Media - I see Social as the future but SEO has always and will always be there and never get penalised from the search engines etc.
Obviously SEO has to be done the right way and when done right it will always prosper.
