I'm really pissed off as my website went from page1 to nowhere. At first I thought I may have been punished for link building but I have since found out I have a on site virus. In my Webmaster Tools the domain shows as being normal. Obviously I'm going to rectify virus but not sure what else I can do?Any ideas?Took alot of work to get Keyword ranking now it feels like I've wasted my time and money.

You can try sending a reconsideration request to Google after you've cleaned up your site.

    Virus? What's that about?

Not sure about the virus comment but the rest sounds like a simple Google dance in the SERPs, which sometimes happens from building low quality links (blast) pointing directly at the page your trying to rank.

Here's a tip, build multiple pages to rank for the same [exact] keyword (keep pages unique) & internal link those relevant pages. Use quality links from pages with similar text as the page your ranking in the SERPs.

If its been hacked or a virus as you say than just clean it up and your rankings should restore. If they don't file a reconsideration request (even though I find that to be a useless endeavor myself others have had luck with doing it).

One of my websites was once compromised, I cleared out the virus and stuff. Then contacted Webmaster tools, reported it back as clean and everything, then my website went straight back to the #1 spot in days.

If your website is marked as compromised, it has not actually lost the rank by the way, there will be a little note below the URL marking it as infected. Anyways it's fixable, that is the point of the story and you should not lose PR.

Look through your analytics to see what date the traffic dropped. From that you can work out if there was an algo update at that time.

If there was, then you can assume its the algo update or the malware at fault.

If there wasn't, you know its very likely to be the malware at fault.

Work that out first and report back

I have seen sites keep their ranking despite a malware so it could be either Google Dance or back links. Yukon has a good tip. Build multiple pages to rank for the same keyword. I myself plan to employ this tactic.
