If one of your site visitors was logged in to their Google account when they did their Google search and clicked your link in the results, then Google Analytics won't tell you what keyword they searched on. Analytics just says "Not Provided".

You can only see keywords searched by people who are NOT logged in to Google when they search.

Yes perfect answer. I also recommend to anyone searching on Google to LOG OUT. They track your every move and build a profile around what you are searching for tagged back to your profile.

So they put Not Provided in GA - but they keep it for themselves to market to you as well as use that data for god knows what.

I totally agree with the Patey. In Google Analytics, they only display the keywords which are search on Google without Log in where it Display "Not Provided" on keywords which are searching with the Log in Google Accounts.

If you consider what people are saying, you can kind of work it out, well, you can if you get a reasonable amount of traffic.

If you understand it is simply people using Google who are logged into their Google account that have their search keywords hidden, then it's fairly simple to work out the likely keywords and volumes?

Unless you think you have a magic keyword that is only typed in by logged in users.

If you take your known keywords, and work out the percentages of the search volume, you can then use those percentages to understand the "not provided".

      For example.

      not provided - 300
      Keyword 1 - 76 (38%)
      Keyword 2 - 54 (27%)
      Keyword 3 - 40 (20%)
      Keyword 4 - 30 (15%)

So keywords 1 through 4 add up to 200, and you can work out the percentages.

You have 300 not provided, I say:

About 38% of them are keyword 1.
About 27% of them are keyword 2.
About 20% of them are keyword 3.
About 15% of them are keyword 4.

      38% of 300 = 114
      27% of 300 = 81
      20% of 300 = 60
      15% of 300 = 45

So now you can work out your real keyword volumes.

      Keyword 1 - 190
      Keyword 2 - 135
      Keyword 3 - 100
      Keyword 4 - 75

I hope that helps, obviously it won't tell you any obscure keywords, but an excel spreadsheet can make it very easy.

      Good luck

Whenever anybody brings up Google analytics, it is important that I informed them of the following which has been taking place as there seems to be a lack of knowledge connecting the two events that I'm going to describe. Google will look at your data without your permission to evaluate whether or not they feel as if you're participating in any activities that they do not agree with such as the recent elimination of many affiliate sites that they deem as portal pages which have a high click through rate. This activity appears to me more obvious when you are running Google ads and link the two accounts.

There is a reason why Google is offering their analytics for free, but maybe a higher price to pay and what you would of thought.

It is the lastest example of the hypocrisy that is Google. If they are logged into their account Google blocks the KW. However if you are running a PPC campaign they do not block the KW. They say it is blocked for privacy but if you are a paying customer of theirs they do not block it.

So if you want the data start a PPC campaign and you will see all the KW's people are using to access your site though Google.
